Apart from scenes where the Guv has thrown Sam against a hard surface, I think this picture sums up their relationship perfectly.
An often imagined alternate ending to Life on Mars: Sam makes it back to 2006 and, in the midst of his existential crisis, gets a call from a very familiar voice telling him to meet him down the pub right bloody now.
